Recording size, without wrecking the text

Email caps, Slack caps and portal caps are different. Recast exports the same take at each size instead of asking you to re-encode by hand.

Small files that still read clearly

A ten-minute 1440p capture is gigabytes. A demo that has to pass through email is 20 MB. Recast exports the same take at the size each channel actually accepts, and keeps UI text visually lossless at those bitrates.

Channel presets

Slack, email, portal and vertical, each with its own resolution and bitrate ceiling — chosen because that channel rejects anything bigger.

Bitrate sized to the clip

The target bitrate is derived from the clip length and the cap, so a 30-second clip does not get the same budget as a 10-minute one.

Text stays readable

Encoding is tuned for flat UI and small type: sharp edges, no ringing around glyphs, no visible blocking in toolbars.

What "visually lossless" means here

It does not mean the file is uncompressed. It means the compression is chosen so the things a viewer judges — text, cursor, UI edges — are not visibly degraded at normal viewing size.

  • No claim of mathematical losslessness: H.264 is lossy by definition.
  • ProRes export exists when you need an editing hand-off rather than a delivery file.
  • If a channel accepts more, the portal preset uses it instead of downscaling.
  • Captions are burned in, so they survive re-compression by the receiving platform.

If a vendor promises "lossless compression" for video, they mean "we picked a high bitrate". So do we — we just say it plainly.

FAQ

Can I choose the bitrate myself?

The presets are opinionated on purpose. ProRes is the escape hatch when you need a master to grade elsewhere.

Why is my export bigger than the preset cap?

Very short clips can land above target because the encoder has less room to spend the budget. The portal preset is the one without a cap.
