Screen Studio for Windows
Screen Studio is macOS-only. Recast is the Windows equivalent — same one-step polish, native capture, one-time purchase.
The short answer
There is no Screen Studio build for Windows, and running it in a virtual machine gives you a slow, scaled capture of a Mac. If you record demos on Windows, you need a Windows-native tool that applies the same treatment: zoom that follows the click, a clean frame, a cursor that looks intentional — and an export that is ready to send.
Recast was built for exactly that: record on Windows, leave with a finished file.

What actually differs
Both tools start from a screen recording and end at a polished file. The difference is the platform you are stuck with, and how much of the finishing work is automatic.
Platform
Screen Studio ships for macOS. Recast ships for Windows 10/11 as a single installer with the encoder bundled — no toolchain, no admin rights, no VM.
Export shape
Screen Studio is built around one polished master. Recast assumes the same take has to fit four channels, so Slack, email, portal and vertical are produced together — plus GIF and ProRes.
Effects depth
Screen Studio has the larger motion library. Recast keeps the defaults tight: zoom on click, framing, cursor, captions, camera. Fewer knobs, fewer ways to make it look wrong.
Coming from macOS: what maps to what
The vocabulary is different, the intent is the same.
| Screen Studio | Recast |
|---|---|
| Display / Window / Area recording | Display, Window and Area, chosen on the desktop picker — no list to hunt through |
| Auto zoom | Zoom on click, generated while recording |
| Manual zoom | Per-section zoom, editable after the fact |
| Background / padding / shadow | Same controls in the inspector |
| Cursor smoothing | Cursor rendering with click ripples |
| Camera overlay | Overlay, split screen or full screen |
| Trim | Timeline slicing with split, delete, speed and undo |
| Export | MP4 presets, GIF, ProRes, vertical |
When to pick which
Pick Screen Studio if
Your whole workflow is on a Mac, you want the deepest motion-design control, and $89+ for a mature macOS app is fine.
Pick Recast if
You record on Windows, you need the same take in several formats, and you want a $39 one-time licence that works offline on a locked-down laptop.
Use both if
Design and marketing sit on Macs while sales engineers are on Windows. The two files look consistent because the treatment is the same.
Common questions
Is there a Windows version of Screen Studio?
No — Screen Studio is a macOS application. Recast is the closest Windows equivalent: native capture on Windows 10/11 with the same one-step polish and channel-ready exports.
What does Recast do that Screen Studio does not?
Runs on Windows, exports the same take as MP4 presets plus GIF and ProRes, and costs $39 once instead of $89+.
What does Screen Studio do better?
On macOS it has a broader effects library, a more mature manual zoom editor and a longer track record. If your workflow is entirely on a Mac and you want maximum motion control, it is the stronger choice.
Can I open Screen Studio projects in Recast?
No, the project formats differ. Recast works from your raw capture, so the practical path is to re-record on Windows and let Recast apply zoom and framing automatically.
