Record your screen with zoom on Windows
Windows records pixels, not attention. Here is how zoom gets into the file without an afternoon of keyframes.
Why a plain capture is not enough
Windows can record the screen out of the box. What it cannot do is make the viewer see what you are pointing at. At 100% zoom on a 1440p display, a form field is about 14 pixels tall in a 1080p video — legible only if the viewer already knows where to look.
The three ways people solve it
Zoom the app itself while recording (loses context), edit keyframes afterwards (slow), or generate the zoom from the clicks (what Recast does).
Why editing afterwards loses
A two-minute walkthrough has 20–40 clicks. Hand-animating them is the reason the file never gets sent.
Why zooming the app loses
Resizing the browser or OS zoom mid-recording reflows the layout. The viewer sees a different page than the one you were explaining.
Record with zoom on Windows, in four steps
- Install and open Recast. One installer, bundled encoder, no admin rights.
- Pick what to record. Display, Window or Area — chosen directly on the desktop, not from a list.
- Record the walkthrough. Click through the flow the way you would with a customer. Every click becomes a zoom target.
- Export. The zoom is already applied. Delete the moves you do not want, then export to MP4, GIF or ProRes.
If you already have a recording, Recast cannot add zoom to it — the zoom track comes from the capture. Re-record; it is usually faster than keyframing by hand.
What to watch for
- Scaled displays. At 125% or 150% scaling, tools that zoom on raw screen coordinates drift off target. Recast computes in the recording's own pixel space.
- Multi-monitor. Record the display you actually demo on; mixing two displays in one take makes the zoom jump.
- Pacing. Leave half a second after each click. The zoom needs that beat, and so does the viewer.
- Cursor. A raw capture shows the real cursor, which is fine — as long as clicks are visible. Ripples help.
FAQ
Does Windows have a built-in screen recorder with zoom?
No. Xbox Game Bar and the Snipping Tool record the screen as-is. Zoom has to be added by the recording tool or by editing afterwards.
Can I add zoom to a recording I already have?
In Recast, no: the zoom track is derived from the clicks during capture. Existing files have to be edited in a video editor.
Is the zoom automatic or manual?
Automatic by default — one zoom per click. You can delete individual zooms on the timeline, and the export follows.
Record it once, on Windows.
Install, record two minutes, export. If it does not look better than what you send today, uninstall it.
